What clear aligners do
Clear aligners are a series of thin, transparent trays that gradually move teeth into a planned position. Each tray is worn for one to two weeks before progressing to the next, and the full series is mapped tooth-by-tooth with 3D digital planning.
They suit a broad range of adult and teenage cases — from mild crowding and small gaps to more complex bite corrections — but they aren't a one-size-fits-all solution. Some cases respond better to traditional fixed braces, and a small percentage benefit from referral to a specialist orthodontist.
Suitability — and an honest conversation
The most important step in aligner treatment is the one most clinics rush: an honest assessment of whether aligners are actually the right tool for your case. At Smile Star Dental we'll take the time to talk through:
- What's realistic to achieve in your case
- Which approach (aligners, fixed braces, or referral) gives the best outcome
- The expected timeframe and number of trays
- Costs upfront, with no surprises mid-treatment
- What happens if your case needs refinements at the end
If we don't think aligners will give you a good result, we'll say so. Where appropriate, we work with specialist orthodontists in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie area to make sure complex cases are referred early rather than partway through treatment.
Living with aligners day-to-day
Aligners are removable, so you take them out to eat and to brush. They're designed to be worn 20–22 hours a day — anything less and progress slows or stops. Most patients adapt within a week, though a small temporary lisp is common at first.
Cleaning is straightforward: rinse trays in cool water, brush them gently with a soft toothbrush, and avoid hot drinks or strongly coloured liquids while wearing them. We'll go through care, attachments and tray changes in detail at your fitting appointment.
Mid-treatment reviews and refinements
Every 6–10 weeks we see you for a short progress check. This lets us catch any teeth that aren't tracking exactly to plan and adjust early rather than at the end. Most full cases include a "refinement" phase — a short additional series of aligners — to fine-tune the final bite and aesthetics. This is normal, included in your treatment plan, and not a sign that anything has gone wrong.
Retention — the part most clinics under-explain
Teeth continue to move slowly throughout life, with or without orthodontic history. Without retainers, even a perfectly finished case will gradually relapse. That's why we always include a retention plan: typically a thin fixed wire behind the front teeth combined with removable retainers worn at night.
Retention is reviewed at every routine check-up, and replacement retainers can be made digitally without re-doing the impressions.
Outcomes and individual results
We don't promise a specific finishing result. Aligner outcomes depend on case complexity, biology, attachments, wear time and home care, and individual results vary. The aim of consultation is to give you a clear, realistic picture of what aligner treatment can — and can't — do for your mouth, before any commitment is made.
What to expect
Orthodontic consultation
We assess your teeth, gums, bite and jaw joints, take 3D scans and review your goals. You'll see a digital simulation of likely outcomes and receive a written treatment plan and quote.
Aligner or appliance design
Your treatment plan is mapped tooth-by-tooth and reviewed by your dentist. Aligners or brackets are then manufactured to that plan.
Active treatment
Aligners are typically worn 20–22 hours a day and changed every 1–2 weeks. We see you for short progress reviews every 6–10 weeks. Mild attachments may be bonded to teeth to help precise movements.
Refinements (if needed)
Most cases benefit from a short refinement phase at the end to fine-tune the bite or any teeth that haven't tracked exactly to plan. This is a common, normal part of treatment.
Retention
Teeth move throughout life. We provide retainers — usually a combination of fixed wires behind the front teeth and removable trays — and review them at routine check-ups.
What to consider
- Not every case is suitable for clear aligners — severe crowding, complex bite issues or skeletal jaw discrepancies may need fixed braces, surgery, or referral to a specialist orthodontist.
- Aligner success depends heavily on wear time and home care; missed wear extends treatment.
- Mild discomfort, lisp or temporary gum sensitivity is common in the first weeks.
- Without retainers, teeth tend to move back over time.
- Outcomes vary case by case and are reviewed at each visit.
All dental procedures carry risks. Suitability, treatment options, duration, costs and potential complications should be discussed with a registered dental practitioner. Individual results vary. Information on this page is general and not a substitute for personalised clinical advice.
Frequently asked questions
- Limited single-arch cases can start around $4,500. Most full upper-and-lower cases range from $6,000–$9,000 depending on complexity, the number of aligners required and any attachments or refinements. We provide a written quote after consultation, with payment plans available.
