Bright, even smile after professional dental teeth whitening.

Professional teeth whitening in Warners Bay

Dentist-supervised whitening for a brighter, more even smile — using clinically formulated gels, shade-matched goals and post-treatment care to help reduce sensitivity. Suitability is checked first to make sure whitening is safe and effective for your teeth.

Signs you may benefit

  • Yellowing or dulling from coffee, tea, red wine or smoking
  • An upcoming wedding, formal or photoshoot
  • An uneven smile after orthodontic treatment
  • Sensitive results from over-the-counter strips and pens
  • Wanting to avoid shaving down teeth for veneers if possible

What dentist-supervised whitening involves

Whitening is a cosmetic procedure that lightens the shade of natural tooth enamel using a clinically formulated peroxide-based gel. At Smile Star Dental we offer two supervised options:

  1. In-chair whitening, where a high-strength gel is applied in the dental chair behind a protective gum barrier. Most appointments take around 60–90 minutes and aim to lift the shade quickly for an event or photoshoot.
  2. Take-home whitening, where 3D scans are used to make custom trays that fit your gum line. You wear them at home for 30–90 minutes a day for 1–2 weeks. This approach is gentler, better suited to sensitive teeth, and easier to top up later.

Both options are dentist-supervised, meaning we check your suitability first and follow up afterwards.

When whitening makes sense — and when it doesn't

Whitening is a great option for healthy teeth and gums where the staining is genuinely on or in the enamel layer. It's not the right answer when:

  • The tooth is grey or has darkened due to past trauma or root canal treatment — these cases sometimes need internal whitening or veneers.
  • You have visible crowns, veneers or large white fillings on front teeth, which won't whiten and may need to be replaced afterwards.
  • You're pregnant or breastfeeding — we recommend deferring whitening for that period.
  • You have active decay, leaking fillings or untreated gum disease — these need to be addressed first to avoid sensitivity and uneven results.

Part of our consultation is being honest about these scenarios and, where appropriate, suggesting an alternative.

What to expect during and after whitening

During in-chair whitening, you'll feel mild warmth and pressure but no significant discomfort. Most people watch a show or listen to music through the appointment. After whitening — both in-chair and take-home — it's normal to experience 24–48 hours of mild tooth sensitivity, particularly to cold drinks. We provide a desensitising paste and clear instructions to help manage this.

For the first 24–48 hours after each session, we recommend avoiding heavily staining foods and drinks such as red wine, beetroot, curries, dark sauces, coffee and tea. After that, your teeth aren't any more vulnerable to staining than before.

Maintaining your results

Whitening is not permanent. How long results last depends on your daily habits — particularly coffee, tea, red wine and smoking. Most patients keep great results for 12–18 months by:

  • Brushing twice a day with a soft brush and fluoride toothpaste
  • Drinking strongly coloured drinks through a straw where possible
  • Booking regular professional cleans
  • Doing a 1–2 night top-up with their custom trays every 6–12 months

We provide top-up gel for your trays at a low cost so you don't need to commit to a full new whitening course each time.

Realistic outcomes

We don't guarantee a particular shade — Australian advertising guidelines, and our own clinical honesty, don't allow that. What we can do is give you an evidence-based estimate of the likely improvement based on your current shade, the type of staining and your enamel quality. Individual results vary, and we'll show you a shade guide at consultation so we can agree on realistic expectations together.

What to expect

  1. Whitening consultation

We check the health of your teeth and gums, identify any areas (such as crowns, fillings or cracks) that won't whiten the same as natural enamel, and agree on a realistic shade goal.

  2. Pre-whitening clean (recommended)

A professional clean removes surface staining and plaque so the whitening gel can act evenly across the tooth surface.

  3. In-chair whitening (option A)

Gums are isolated with a protective barrier, and a clinically formulated gel is applied to the front teeth in 15-minute cycles. Most appointments take around 60–90 minutes.

  4. Take-home whitening (option B)

Custom trays are made from 3D scans of your teeth, fitted to your gum line. Gel is worn at home for 30–90 minutes daily over 1–2 weeks following our instructions.

  5. Post-whitening review

We review the final shade, address any lingering sensitivity, and discuss how to maintain results over time.

What to consider

  • Whitening is a cosmetic treatment — outcomes vary based on starting shade, age, enamel thickness, diet and habits.
  • Existing crowns, veneers, fillings and bonded resin do not whiten. They may need replacement to match if you whiten significantly.
  • Tooth or gum sensitivity for 24–48 hours is the most common side effect. Most cases settle quickly with desensitising paste.
  • Whitening is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or in patients with active decay, leaking restorations or untreated gum disease.
  • Whitening is not permanent — most people benefit from short top-up treatments every 6–18 months.

All dental procedures carry risks. Suitability, treatment options, duration, costs and potential complications should be discussed with a registered dental practitioner. Individual results vary. Information on this page is general and not a substitute for personalised clinical advice.
