Children's dentist in Warners Bay & Newcastle
Signs you may benefit
- Your child has never been to the dentist (around their first birthday is a great time)
- Visible holes, white spots or staining on baby teeth
- Snoring, mouth breathing or restless sleep
- A history of grinding, thumb sucking or tongue thrusting
- A knock or fall to a tooth — even if it didn't break
- Anxiety from a previous dental experience
A dentist your kids actually like coming back to
A great childhood relationship with the dentist is one of the strongest predictors of lifelong dental health. The mechanics of paediatric dentistry — fluoride, sealants, fillings, screenings — matter, but the experience matters just as much.
At Smile Star Dental we keep it simple: child-friendly language, a slow first visit, a ceiling-mounted TV in the room, noise-blocking headphones, and absolutely no scare tactics. We let kids set the pace.
What's included in a children's check-up
A standard children's check-up covers:
- A full examination of teeth and gums
- Screening for decay, including with low-dose digital X-rays where indicated
- A look at the bite, jaw growth and airway (relevant for snoring, mouth breathing or restless sleep)
- Application of fluoride varnish to strengthen enamel where helpful
- Fissure sealants on newly erupted permanent molars to protect deep grooves
- A child-friendly brushing and flossing demonstration
- A practical home-care chat with parents — the diet, drinks and snack patterns that really matter
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)
The federal CDBS covers up to $1,132 of basic dental services over two years for eligible children aged 0–17. We typically bulk-bill the covered items at Smile Star Dental, meaning eligible families pay nothing out of pocket for routine preventive and restorative care.
Eligibility is automatic if your family receives Family Tax Benefit Part A or another qualifying payment. We'll check eligibility at your first visit and let you know what's covered before any treatment.
Trauma, sport and mouthguards
Knocks to the mouth — from playgrounds, sport or simple accidents — are common in kids. If a tooth is knocked out, chipped or pushed out of position, get to a dentist or emergency department as soon as possible (don't put a knocked-out adult tooth back in if it's a baby tooth — call us for guidance).
For any child playing contact sport, a properly fitted custom mouthguard is a worthwhile investment. Off-the-shelf "boil and bite" guards offer a fraction of the protection.
Airway, growth and the bigger picture
Crowded adult teeth, narrow palates, mouth breathing and snoring in childhood are not just dental issues — they're often signs of growth and airway concerns that benefit from early attention. Where appropriate, we'll discuss whether a child airway development review is worth doing while jaw and facial growth is still on your side.
A note for parents
The single biggest predictor of childhood decay isn't genetics — it's diet patterns and hygiene routines at home. We work with parents, not around them, with realistic, judgment-free advice about lunchboxes, drinks, between-meal snacks and the brushing routines that actually fit a busy household.
What to expect
Easy first visit
We start with a tour of the chair, count teeth in a fun way, and only proceed at your child's pace. Many first visits are mostly meet-and-greet — no drilling, no pressure.
Comprehensive check-up
We assess teeth, gums, the bite and the airway, and screen for early signs of grinding, thumb sucking or tongue posture issues that can affect growth.
Prevention plan
Where helpful, we apply protective fluoride varnish and seal the deep grooves of new permanent molars. We'll show your child age-appropriate brushing and flossing in plain language.
Treatment if needed
When treatment is needed, we explain everything in child-friendly language, use child-sized instruments and topical numbing, and pace each step. Distraction tools (TV, headphones, noise blockers) are available.
Healthy habits review
Diet, drinks, between-meal snacks, brushing, flossing — small habit changes make a big difference at this age. We'll send you home with a clear, realistic plan.
What to consider
- Untreated decay in baby teeth can affect adult teeth, infection risk and space for permanent teeth — so 'they'll fall out anyway' isn't always a safe assumption.
- Some treatments (such as deep fillings or extractions in very young children) may be better delivered in a hospital setting under sedation; we will refer if appropriate.
- Trauma to a baby tooth can affect the developing adult tooth underneath — we recommend a check after any significant knock to the mouth.
- Outcomes from prevention depend heavily on diet, hygiene and home routine — we work with parents, not around them.
All dental procedures carry risks. Suitability, treatment options, duration, costs and potential complications should be discussed with a registered dental practitioner. Individual results vary. Information on this page is general and not a substitute for personalised clinical advice.
Frequently asked questions
- A general rule is by their first birthday or when their first tooth comes through. Early visits are mostly about meeting the team, normalising the experience and giving parents a chance to ask the questions that come up with new teeth, dummies, thumb-sucking and breastfeeding.
