Wisdom Teeth Removal: What to Expect Before, During, and After

December 3, 20247 min read

Wisdom teeth are often removed when there is not enough room, repeated infection, decay, or pressure on neighbouring teeth.

Before surgery

Your dentist or oral surgeon will review X-rays or a 3D scan, discuss anaesthesia options (local, sedation, or general), and give fasting instructions if needed. Arrange a ride home if you will be sedated.

During the visit

The area is numbed; you may feel pressure but not sharp pain. Impacted teeth may be sectioned before removal. The site is usually closed with stitches that dissolve over time.

Aftercare basics

Bite on gauze as directed, use cold packs the first day, and follow medication instructions. Avoid straws, smoking, and vigorous rinsing for the period your team specifies—this lowers the risk of dry socket. Soft foods and gentle salt water rinses after the initial healing window are typical.

Call your clinic if pain worsens after improving, swelling spikes, or you develop a fever.
